Shelley Rose
Shelley Rose began his artistic career in the early 70’s. He worked first as an artist with the distinguished Michael Rothenstein RA and Christie’s Contemporary Art. As a respected, talented and knowledgable artist he has also taught at both Goldsmiths College and Central Saint Martins, London.
Shelley has become renowned for his enigmatic silkscreen circle which has emerged from observation of light and light phenomena. In 2005 Shelley Rose won the John Purcell Award for Outstanding and in 2009 The Aberystwyth Purchase Prize.
Move To White, one of his enigmatic silkscreen’s from Shelley’s Circle series, has since been taken into the British Museum. There are only three such collections of this kind in the world and they include works by artists such as Michaelangelo, Goya through to modern day work by Norman Ackroyd and David Hockney and now of course Shelley Rose.
Jenny Ramkalawon, curator of the British Museum collection has stated that
‘Shelley’s work is a wonderful addition to our collection’.
Shelley also had another of his circles, ‘Black Light’ purchased by the CSM Museum and Study Collection of the University of the Arts London, a rich art and design collection.

The Royal Academy, Somerset House.

ELEMENT BLUE
A TRUE CELEBRATION OF MODERN DAY INTERACTIVE FINE ART
‘Out of the primordial darkness a circle of pure ultramarine emerges. This intensifies until we become aware of other circular forms that are moving and flashing in front of our eyes. This is called after imaging and serves to remind us of past events’ – Shelley Rose
The canvas is prepared in the traditional way and stretched across a hardwood block that is strikingly adorned with studding on all four sides. When focusing on the studding at the top of the painting it creates an optical illusion and the circle magically disappears.

GREEN BY DESIGN
A JOYOUS SYNTHESIS OF HISTORICAL AND MODERN ART
Retaining the raw beauty of the stretched linen, the canvas is prepared using layers of copper intermixed with compounds, this process is continually repeated. Once finished, it is left to age over time to create a dramatic backdrop of naturally occurring Verdigris Patina that will continue to evolve. The memorising halo of overlayed earth pigments creates a spectrum of coloured hues as the circle emerges.
Secured onto a tiered solid wood platform painted in the classical 19th century colour Scheele’s Green.

NOVA SERIES
EXCEPTIONAL, POWERFUL WORKS OF ART THAT COMMAND ATTENTION
The vibrant blue, suede like canvases were created using an abundance of (now unobtainable) LAPIS LAZULI. A rare and precious stone that can only be found in the mountains of Afghanistan, which further contributes to the significance of these important works of art.
Secured and adorned with forged copper nails the painting is painstakingly overlaid with billions of particles that create memorising colour variations powerfully conveying a hypnotic ‘Nova’ force of energy.
‘A celebratory synthesis between art & science. In creating ‘NOVA’ I set myself the challenge to visualise and interpret the bursts of these momentous events.’ – Shelley Rose

WHITE OVER CLAY
A TIMELESS, ELEGANT WORK OF ART
‘Out of the Primordial light, a circle emerges to give us life and hope. The uneven surface of the background suggests the continued challenges and emotional turmoil’s of Life. The circle forms a rim around a paler distance and promises a brighter future and a way through amidst the struggle of our human existence.’ – Shelley Rose
This circle of life is a primordial dream, possessing an extraordinary aura that projects and fills one with a sense of calm and serenity. The earthy, muted tones and subtle textures of the paints mixed together with Volcanic Ash create a texture and finish that elevates this painting to the highest level.

TECHTONIC SHIFT
A TRULY MEMORIZING, HYPNOTIC WORK OF ART
‘The soft pink circle emerging from a ring of white light shifts to reveal a brighter future. The shifting circles are a glimpse of a new and emerging reality.’ – Shelley Rose
